Description

This oatmeal is a wonderfully warming and satisfying breakfast that is prepared in the Thermomix® in no time at all. I love how creamy it gets when it simmers briefly in the mixing bowl and then steeps for a while. Perfect for cold days or when you need a quick breakfast in the morning. With a pinch of cinnamon and some sugar, it becomes a real comfort food. If you like, you can also refine it with fresh fruit or nuts. A great start to the day!

About this recipe

Oatmeal, or porridge, as it is called internationally, is more than just a breakfast for me. It is a reminder of my childhood, of cold winter mornings when my grandma stood in the kitchen and prepared this simple but so nourishing porridge. The scent of warm milk and cinnamon hung in the air and promised a good start to the day. Back then, of course, without Thermomix®, but the principle has remained the same: simple ingredients that together create something wonderful. The basis of our oatmeal is of course the rolled oats. I prefer tender rolled oats because they cook faster and result in a particularly creamy consistency. However, coarse rolled oats work just as well, but give the porridge a little more bite. The milk provides the creaminess and the taste. I prefer to use whole milk because it gives the porridge a nice sweetness and richness. If you prefer something lighter, you can also use low-fat milk or a plant-based alternative. The water serves to dilute the milk a little and prevent the porridge from becoming too thick. A pinch of salt is essential to enhance the flavors of the other ingredients and prevent the porridge from tasting bland. The butter adds an additional dimension of flavor and makes the porridge even creamier. It is added only at the end to develop its full flavor. Sugar and cinnamon are the classic spices for oatmeal. The sugar provides the sweetness, which everyone can adjust to their liking. The cinnamon gives the porridge a warm, spicy note that is perfect for cold days. The preparation in the Thermomix® is very simple and saves time. It is important to maintain the specified temperature of 100°C so that the milk does not burn. Level 1 ensures a gentle movement in the mixing bowl so that the rolled oats cook evenly. After cooking, I always let the porridge steep for a while so that it reaches the perfect consistency. The butter is only added then so that it does not overcook and retains its full flavor. If you don't have a Thermomix®, you can of course also prepare the oatmeal in a pot on the stove. It is important to stir the porridge constantly so that it does not burn. The oatmeal can be varied wonderfully. For a vegan version, you can simply use plant-based milk and replace the butter with margarine or coconut oil. Instead of cinnamon, you can also use other spices such as cardamom, nutmeg or vanilla. If you like it fruity, you can add fresh or frozen fruits such as berries, apples or bananas. Nuts, seeds or dried fruits also go perfectly with oatmeal. The oatmeal is best served warm. I love to garnish it with fresh fruit, nuts and a drizzle of maple syrup or honey. A dollop of yogurt or quark also goes well with it. If you like it a little more decadent, you can also sprinkle chocolate shavings or cocoa powder over it. Leftovers of the oatmeal can be stored in the refrigerator. It will then become a little firmer, but can easily be reheated in the microwave or in a pot. You can also prepare the oatmeal well in advance and just reheat it the next morning. This saves time and ensures a relaxed start to the day.
