About this recipe

This recipe for chocolate nut confection has been with me since my childhood. My grandma always baked it for Christmas, and the smell of chocolate and nuts wafting through the whole house is one of my fondest childhood memories. I have adapted her recipe slightly over the years to make it easier and faster to prepare without losing the original taste. The Thermomix® has proven to be an invaluable aid in this. The ingredients are deliberately kept simple, but each one contributes to the overall result. The soft margarine or butter provides the necessary juiciness and binding of the dough. The sugar naturally contributes to the sweetness, but it also caramelizes slightly during baking and gives the confection a slightly crispy surface. The ground almonds or hazelnuts are the heart of the recipe. They bring not only a nutty flavor, but also a pleasant texture to the dough. Here you can vary according to your preference. Almonds are a little finer, hazelnuts a little stronger in taste. The grated block chocolate provides the intense chocolate flavor. Make sure to use a high-quality chocolate, as this significantly affects the taste of the confection. The flour serves as a binder and ensures that the dough holds together. The eggs also contribute to the binding and make the dough loose and airy. When preparing in the Thermomix®, it is important that the margarine or butter is really soft so that it mixes well with the other ingredients. If you want to grate the chocolate yourself, you can also do it in the Thermomix®. Put the chocolate in pieces into the mixing bowl and chop it for a few seconds on speed 8. Make sure it doesn't get too warm. When mixing the dough, it is important that all ingredients are well mixed. If necessary, you can repeat the process and push the dough from the edge with the spatula. When baking, you should keep an eye on the temperature and baking time, as every oven is different. The confection should be golden brown and no longer liquid in the middle. For a vegetarian version, you can simply use butter instead of margarine. A vegan version is a bit more difficult, but there are now good vegan margarine alternatives and egg substitutes that you can try. To give the confection a special touch, you can add some orange zest, cinnamon or cardamom to the dough. A shot of rum or Amaretto also goes perfectly. The chocolate nut confection tastes best when it has cooled down. You can enjoy it plain or serve it with a cup of coffee or tea. A scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream also go well with it. The confection is also ideal as a gift. Pack it in a nice tin or a cellophane bag with a ribbon. The confection will keep in an airtight tin in the refrigerator for about a week. You can also freeze it. This way you always have a small supply for unexpected visitors. You can also prepare the confection well in advance. You can prepare the dough the day before and store it in the refrigerator. The next day you just have to spread it on the baking sheet and bake it.
