About this recipe

These hearty burger buns, often lovingly called "Oopsies", are a great alternative to traditional buns, especially if you want to avoid carbohydrates or just try something new. I stumbled upon this recipe when I was looking for ways to change my diet a bit without having to sacrifice enjoyment. And what can I say? They have since become a staple in my kitchen! The list of ingredients is manageable, but each individual ingredient plays an important role. The eggs are the heart of the Oopsies. The egg whites, beaten until stiff, provide the fluffy texture, while the egg yolks, in combination with the cream cheese, provide the necessary binding and a slightly sour taste. The cream cheese, preferably double cream cheese, makes the buns juicy and prevents them from becoming too dry. A pinch of salt should not be missing to emphasize the flavors. The preparation in the Thermomix® is very simple. Beating the egg whites until stiff is perfect with the butterfly attachment. Make sure that the mixing bowl is absolutely clean and free of grease, otherwise the egg whites will not become stiff properly. When folding the egg whites into the egg yolk-cream cheese mixture, patience is required. Work carefully with a spatula to preserve the lightness of the egg whites. The baking time may vary depending on the oven, so keep an eye on the Oopsies. They should be golden brown, but not too dark. For the burger patties, I prefer to use mixed ground meat, as it is juicier than pure beef. The onion is finely chopped in the Thermomix®, which saves time and tears. Of course, you can also use other spices, depending on your taste. Garlic powder, paprika powder or a pinch of chili are excellent. Vegetarian or vegan? No problem! Replace the ground meat with vegetarian burger patties or grilled halloumi. For a vegan version, you can prepare the Oopsies with vegan cream cheese and egg substitute. Serve the burgers with your favorite ingredients. Fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, onion rings and of course sauces such as mustard, mayonnaise or ketchup should not be missing. As a side dish, French fries (made from sweet potatoes!), a crispy salad or coleslaw go well. The Oopsies can be prepared well in advance. You can bake them the day before and store them in the refrigerator. They are also suitable for freezing. Simply pack them in freezer bags and thaw them when needed. The burger patties can also be prepared and stored in the refrigerator. So nothing stands in the way of a quick and delicious burger evening!
