Description

This toasted tuna and cheddar sandwich is a delightful twist on a classic comfort food. Flaked tuna is combined with celery, green onion, capers, mayonnaise, and a touch of Asian chile paste for a flavorful filling. Fresh mozzarella adds a creamy texture, while sharp cheddar melts beautifully under the broiler. It's quick to prepare, perfect for a satisfying lunch or a light dinner. I love to add a pinch of cayenne pepper for an extra kick. This recipe is a great way to use up leftover bread and create a delicious, budget-friendly meal.

Ingredients (12 ingredients)

  • 6.5 ounce oil-packed tuna, drained
  • 2 tablespoon finely diced celery
  • 1 tablespoon minced green onion
  • 2 teaspoon capers, drained
  • 2 tablespoon mayonnaise, or more to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Asian chile paste (such as sambal oelek)
  • 0.33333333333333 cup fresh mozzarella cheese
  • salt and ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoon softened butter, divided
  • 2 slice thick slices French bread
  • 0.25 cup shredded sharp white Cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper, or to taste

Preparation (6 steps)

Prepare Tuna Salad

Add the drained tuna, diced celery, minced green onion, drained capers, mayonnaise, and Asian chile paste to a mixing bowl. Break the tuna apart with a fork and mix all ingredients well. Pinch in small pieces of mozzarella cheese and stir to combine. Season with salt and ground black pepper to taste. Refrigerate the tuna salad until needed.

Preheat Oven Broiler

Preheat the oven's broiler and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.

Butter Bread Slices

Spread softened butter generously on both sides of the French bread slices.

Toast Bread

Broil the buttered bread until golden brown on top, approximately 2 to 3 minutes. Flip the bread slices and broil the other side until toasted, approximately 2 to 3 more minutes. Remove from the oven and turn bread slices over on the baking sheet so the darkest sides are on the bottom.

Assemble Sandwiches

Gently spread the tuna salad onto the bread slices using 2 forks. Press the salad onto the bread and spread tuna all the way to the edges of the bread. Spread shredded Cheddar over each sandwich. Dust tops with cayenne pepper.

Broil Sandwiches

Place the sandwiches under the broiler and cook until the cheese is melted and bubbling, approximately 5 to 6 minutes. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
