These Matcha Shortbread cookies are a delightful treat, perfect for a cozy afternoon or a festive gathering. The subtle green tea flavor adds a unique twist to the classic shortbread, making them a memorable dessert. I've been making these for years, and they always disappear quickly! The buttery, crumbly texture combined with the earthy matcha is simply irresistible. They're surprisingly easy to make, especially with the Thermomix®, and the vibrant green color makes them visually appealing. These cookies are perfect with a cup of tea or coffee, and they make a lovely homemade gift. Feel free to adjust the amount of matcha to your liking for a stronger or milder flavor.

  • 0.75 taza white sugar, plus more for topping
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons green tea powder (matcha), or more to taste
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt

Add ¾ cup of white sugar to the softened butter in the mixing bowl. Mix for 2 minutes/Stufe 3 until the mixture is light and fluffy.

Combine Dry Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons of green tea powder (matcha), and ¼ teaspoon of salt. Add this mixture to the creamed butter and sugar in the mixing bowl. Mix for 1 minute/Stufe 2 until the dough comes together. Use the spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl if needed.

Shape and Chill Dough

Place a sheet of parchment paper or plastic wrap on a work surface and dust with flour. Roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness on the floured parchment paper. Cut into 2-inch cookies or bars. Roll remaining dough and cut into more cookies until all the dough is used. Refrigerate for 10 minutes.

Prepare for Baking

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Carefully transfer cookies to the prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle sugar over each cookie.

Bake Cookies

Bake in the preheated oven until firm and barely starting to turn golden, about 15 minutes. Cool completely.
