About this recipe

This spicy orange punch is more than just a drink to me, it's a reminder of cold winter evenings in my childhood. My grandmother, a master of simple pleasures, always prepared it when the first snow fell. The scent of oranges and spices filled the whole house and created an atmosphere of warmth and security. I have refined her recipe over the years to adapt it to the Thermomix® without losing the original spirit. The quality of the ingredients is crucial for the taste of this punch. Organic oranges are a must here, as we use the peel and don't want any pesticides in the drink. The sweetness and acidity of the orange form the base, while the vanilla adds a subtle, creamy note. The cinnamon sticks bring a warm, woody spice, the cardamom pods a slightly lemony and floral complexity. The cloves contribute an intense, almost numbing spiciness that perfectly rounds off the punch. Make sure to use whole spices, as they release their aroma more slowly and evenly than ground spices. The preparation in the Thermomix® is very simple. Peeling the orange peel with a zester or a sharp knife requires some tact to remove only the outer, colored layer and avoid the bitter white skin (albedo). Straining the orange juice is important to obtain a clear, elegant punch. However, if you prefer it a little more rustic, you can skip this step. When heating, be careful not to set the temperature too high, as the juice may burn. The 100°C is ideal to optimally extract the aromas of the spices without boiling the juice. After heating, straining is crucial to remove the spices and obtain a clear punch. For a vegan version, you can add honey or maple syrup if you like the punch sweeter. Feel free to experiment with other spices such as star anise, ginger or allspice. A shot of rum or Amaretto gives the punch an additional festive touch, but is of course optional. Serve the punch in preheated tea glasses or cups. The decoration with a cinnamon stick, orange slices and the orange peel makes it a real eye-catcher. Gingerbread, Spekulatius or other winter cookies go well with it. The punch tastes best freshly prepared. However, if you want to prepare it in advance, you can heat the juice with the spices and let it cool. Simply heat and strain again before serving. The punch can be kept in the refrigerator for about 24 hours.
