About this recipe

This melon citrus drink is more than just a recipe to me; it is a reminder of sunny summer afternoons in my childhood. My grandmother had a huge garden where melons thrived. And since she always harvested a little too much, she experimented with different recipes to preserve the sweet fruit or simply enjoy it in a different way. This drink is a tribute to her creativity and her inexhaustible supply of fresh ingredients. The melon is of course the star of this drink. I recommend a watermelon, as it is particularly juicy and refreshing. Be sure to choose a ripe melon – it should sound hollow when tapped and have a slightly matte surface. The sweetness of the melon is wonderfully balanced by the acidity of the citrus fruits. Oranges contribute a fruity sweetness and a pleasant acidity, while lemon provides the extra kick of freshness. The grapefruit contributes a slightly bitter note that gives the drink a certain depth. I like to use both the juice and the pulp of the grapefruit, as the pulp gives the drink an interesting texture. When preparing in the Thermomix®, it is important to cut the melon into pieces that are not too large so that it can be pureed evenly. Cubes of about 2 cm are ideal. Make sure to remove the seeds from the melon before placing it in the mixing bowl. Pureeing on speed 10 ensures a fine and homogeneous consistency. However, if you prefer an even finer consistency, you can pass the drink through a fine sieve after pureeing. This removes any kernels or pulp residue. This drink is naturally vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free. For a vegetarian version, you could add honey or agave syrup to enhance the sweetness, although I personally find that the natural sweetness of the melon and oranges is perfectly adequate. If you like it a little spicier, you can add a small pinch of ginger or a pinch of chili. A few leaves of fresh mint or basil also go perfectly with this drink. Serve the melon citrus drink well chilled with a few ice cubes. Garnish the glasses with fresh melon balls, orange slices or a mint sprig. It goes perfectly with a light breakfast, a brunch or as a refreshing snack in between. It is also a great choice as an accompaniment to grilled fish or poultry. The drink can be kept in the refrigerator for about 1-2 days. However, it loses some of its freshness and color over time. I therefore recommend enjoying it as fresh as possible. If you want to prepare the drink, you can prepare the melon and citrus fruits the day before and store them in the refrigerator. Just before serving, simply add to the Thermomix® and puree.
