About this recipe

For me, this cake with orange and poppy seeds is a reminder of my childhood. My grandma always baked it, especially during Advent. The scent of orange and poppy seeds that spread throughout the house is unforgettable. She didn't prepare it in the Thermomix®, but the result is just as delicious and much faster with this method. The orange is the star here. It not only provides acidity and freshness, but also a wonderful aroma. The grated peel contains the essential oils that make the cake so special. The poppy seeds bring a nutty note and an interesting texture into play. It harmonizes perfectly with the sweetness of the sugar and the acidity of the orange. The margarine ensures the necessary juiciness and keeps the cake fresh for a long time. When preparing it in the Thermomix®, it is important that the margarine is at room temperature so that it combines well with the sugar. The eggs should be added individually so that everything mixes well. Be careful not to stir the flour for too long once it has been added, otherwise the cake may become tough. The spatula is your friend here! Always slide the ingredients down from the edge to achieve an even result. For a vegetarian version, you can replace the margarine with vegan margarine. If you like it a little spicier, you can add a pinch of cardamom or cinnamon to the dough. A dash of orange liqueur in the glaze is also a great addition. It is best to serve the cake lukewarm or chilled. It goes perfectly with a cup of coffee or tea. A dollop of whipped cream or a spoonful of yogurt round off the taste experience. For a special occasion, you can sprinkle the cake with fresh orange segments and poppy seeds. The cake stays fresh in an airtight container for several days. It can also be prepared well in advance. The dough can be prepared the day before and stored in the refrigerator. However, the glaze should only be applied shortly before serving, as it can become sticky.
