About this recipe

This gnocchi casserole is a dish that we always enjoy having at home. It reminds me of my childhood, when my grandma prepared similar casseroles, but without a Thermomix®. She always said that a good casserole has to be simple, quick and filling – and that absolutely applies to this recipe. The gnocchi themselves, these small, finger-shaped potato dough pieces, are the basis of the dish. They bring a pleasant, slightly floury texture that blends wonderfully with the creamy sauce. The spring onions provide a fresh, slightly spicy note that balances the hearty taste of the diced ham. The diced ham, preferably of good quality, gives the casserole a hearty seasoning and a pleasant bite. The cream and cream cheese with herbs form the creamy base of the sauce. The cream cheese not only brings creaminess, but also a subtle herbal note that additionally refines the dish. The Thermomix® makes preparation much easier. First, mix the cream and cream cheese in the mixing bowl to form a homogeneous sauce. This is quick and easy. Be careful not to mix the sauce for too long, as it could otherwise become too thick. A pinch of salt and pepper should of course not be missing to optimally emphasize the aromas. Then put the gnocchi, diced ham and spring onions in a casserole dish, pour the sauce over it and mix everything well. Finally, sprinkle with grated cheese. Here you can vary according to taste: Gouda, Emmental or a mixture of both are well suited. For a vegetarian version, simply omit the diced ham or replace it with smoked tofu cubes. The addition of other vegetables such as peppers, zucchini or mushrooms is also possible. If you like it a little spicier, you can add a pinch of chili flakes or some smoked paprika powder. The gnocchi casserole tastes best when it comes fresh from the oven and the cheese is golden brown and slightly crispy. A fresh salad goes well with it, for example a green salad with a light vinegar-oil dressing. A tomato salad or a cucumber salad are also a good addition. If there is any casserole left over, it can easily be stored in the refrigerator and reheated the next day. It then tastes almost as good as freshly prepared. The casserole can also be prepared well: The gnocchi, diced ham, spring onions and the sauce can be put into the casserole dish the day before and sprinkled with cheese. The next day, the casserole only has to be put in the oven. This saves time and you still have a delicious and filling dish on the table.
