About this recipe

This recipe for marinated anchovies with bell pepper is a tribute to the flavors of my childhood. My grandmother, a true Sicilian, often prepared similar dishes, using the freshest ingredients from the local market. The scent of garlic, bell pepper and the sea then filled the entire kitchen. This recipe is my interpretation of her culinary art, adapted to the modern kitchen technology of the Thermomix®. The anchovies themselves are the star of the dish. Make sure you use fresh, kitchen-ready gutted anchovies. They should be firm and shiny, with no unpleasant odor. The anchovy brings the salty, slightly oily taste into play, which is so typical of Mediterranean cuisine. The garlic, in this case three cloves, provides a pleasant sharpness and spice. It is finely chopped in the Thermomix® so that it can optimally develop its aroma. The red bell pepper contributes a sweet note and a crunchy texture. It forms a nice contrast to the salty taste of the anchovies and the sharp garlic. When preparing in the Thermomix®, it is important not to chop the ingredients for too long. The garlic should be finely chopped, but not processed into a puree. The bell pepper should still have some bite. When mixing the anchovies with the vegetables, the reverse direction is crucial to avoid crushing the delicate fish. The marinating time of at least 15 minutes is important so that the flavors can combine well. But you can also marinate the anchovies for longer, for example overnight in the refrigerator. This intensifies the taste even further. For a vegetarian or vegan version, you could replace the anchovies with marinated olives or pickled artichoke hearts. Instead of bell pepper, you could also use other vegetables such as zucchini or eggplants. There are no limits to your imagination when it comes to spices. Try it with some chili, oregano or thyme. A splash of lemon juice or a dash of white wine vinegar in the marinade adds an extra freshness to the dish. Serve the marinated anchovies with bell pepper as an appetizer or as part of a tapas platter. Fresh bread, olive oil and a glass of dry white wine go well with it. A simple salad or grilled vegetables, for example, are suitable as a side dish. The marinated anchovies with bell pepper can be prepared well in advance and stored in the refrigerator. They can be kept there for up to two days. Before serving, however, you should take them out of the refrigerator in good time so that they can reach room temperature and develop their full aroma.
